- Having a plan means less chaos when an emergency arises. Be prepared for any kind of crisis -- natural or manmade.
- Decide on a meeting place for family; have a phone number for an out of state relative or friend so everyone can check in
- Place emergency telephone numbers by your telephones
- Have supplies for at least 3 days
- Store important family documents in a waterproof container.
- Install safety features in your house, such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers and check batteries regularly.
- Inspect your home for potential hazards (i.e. items that can move, fall, break or catch fire) and correct them.
- Teach your family learn basic safety measures, such as CPR and first aid; how to use a fire extinguisher; and how and when to turn off water, gas and electricity in your home.
- Teach children how and when to call 911.
What to include in your disaster kit:
- A 14-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and food that won't spoil (i.e. canned goods)
- One change of clothing and footwear per person
- One blanket or sleeping bag per person
- A first aid kit including prescription medicines, list of medications including dosage and list of any allergies
- List of the style and serial numbers of medical devices such as pacemakers
- Medical insurance and Medicare cards
- List of doctors and relatives/friends who should be notified if you are injured
- Emergency tools, including a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio and a portable radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries
- Old fashioned non-electric can opener
- Mosquito repellant and sunscreen
- Extra rolls of toilet paper
- An extra set of car keys and a credit card or cash
- Phone numbers of local and non-local relatives or friends
- Insurance agent's name and number
