CALEA Accreditation SealOn March 25, 2000, the Aventura Police Department became the youngest agency to ever receive accreditation status through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). This means that the Police Department has been recognized by an independent organization composed of representatives of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriff's Association, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, and the Police Executive Research Forum, and has complied with over four hundred standards that have been established as benchmarks of excellence. The Department was among the "first in the new millennium" to become accredited and achieved National re-accreditation in March 2003.

Department Sectors:

Navigate through the different services the Aventura Police provide by clicking on the sector names listed on the left. Brief descriptions are presented with pictures. If you are looking for a particular phone number to contact a sector, please view the Police Department Directory.

Bicycle Patrol Unit

The Bicycle Patrol Unit is a specialized unit whose function is performed by sworn members of the Department. Officers must take and complete a police bike course administered by a certified instructor. Bike Patrol Officers supplement road patrol officers in areas around the City that are difficult to patrol in motor vehicles and increase the visibility of police officers in the business districts and residential areas of Aventura. Bike Patrol also allows officers to have personal contact and interaction between the community and members of the Aventura Police Department. The Bike Patrol Unit members ride either solo, with a partner, or monthly as a group.

Canine (K-9) Unit

The Canine Unit is comprised of three teams. Each K-9 team consists of a handler and dog. In addition to basic search, each team is trained in a specialty. Two teams are trained in narcotics detection and one team is trained in bomb detection. One K-9 unit is always available for SWAT call-outs and training scenarios.

Communications Center

"The Communications Center goal is to render courteous, efficient service at all times to the citizens of Aventura, as well as each and every individual with whom the Center may come in contact."

The Communications Center is the central hub of the Aventura Police Department. The area operates on a 24-hour basis and is responsible for the coordination of police services at all times to the residents of Aventura, the police officers and every individual who contacts the Center. The Center provides radio, telephone, teletype, and related electronic services. Communications interface with local, state and national agencies as provided through radio networks, telephone/teletype links, and computer-based information systems. Information concerning all stolen and recovered items, missing and wanted person, and emergency alerts are received and disseminated by the Communications Center.

They can be reached at (305) 466-8999. The R911 Guardian Program is also maintained within the Communications Center.
