Handicap Parking Enforcement Group

The Handicap Parking Enforcement Group comes under the purview of the Traffic Unit. The group consists of volunteers who have been certified in Handicap Parking Enforcement, and patrol parking areas, citing people who unlawfully park in these restricted areas, making it more difficult for those who legitimately have a need to park in them. Members of this dedicated group also go to Court to testify on their own time in order to do their part to insure that violators don't escape the consequences of their actions.

Honor Guard Unit

The Honor Guard Unit is composed of ten sworn officers with two alternates. The Aventura Police Department Honor Guard team was created in 1998. The purpose of the team is to represent the police department and the City of Aventura at local events, holidays, and funerals for fallen officers and/or civilians who have dedicated their life to public service. The Unit attends training monthly. The Honor Guard participates in the local police memorial at Tropical Park, as well as,at the National Law Enforcement Memorial Week in Washington D.C. every year. The members of the Honor Guard team are dedicated to serving the City of Aventura with pride.

Internal Affairs

Internal Affairs is under the direct control of the Chief of Police. In order to ensure the integrity of the Police Department, it is necessary to investigate promptly and thoroughly suspicion or allegations, from whatever source, of misconduct by Department personnel. Annual Report: 2007

Mall Squad

The Police Mall Squad currently made up of eight sworn officers and a police supervisor. The Mall Police Services squad is assigned to patrol and provide specialized services to the commercial center area merchants, patrons and tourists to the Aventura Mall.

This squad has pioneered new crime prevention programs, gathering criminal intelligence, and building partnerships and exchanging criminal trend data with all store security staff personnel, each individual mall merchant, as well as serving as a liaison with the Aventura Mall's management. As several of its programs are being utilized to combat repeat shoplifting and pickpocket offenders, the TPW (Trespass Warning) database, shared by both the police department and the mall's public safety department. A Field Interview card in conjunction with a picture police database program, and a Mobile Lo jack vehicle theft tracking machine are also part of their intense proactive approach. The mall squad is also responsible for attending merchant security meetings, together with providing merchant employee security and crime preventive training.

Marine Patrol Unit

The Marine Patrol Unit has jurisdiction over the Intracoastal Waterway, Dumfoundling Bay and several lakes and canals. The members of the Aventura Police Marine Patrol also work closely with the Blue Lightning Task Force, as well as on specially designated projects. The Marine Patrol Unit is responsible for responding to all water-related incidents inclusive of underwater recovery, theft, boating safety, hull searches, and seizure of marine vessels.

 

 

 

 

Personnel and Training

Personnel and Training incorporates duties related to the training and processing of all police personnel. During the recruitment process, an extensive screening process is adhered to which includes an in-depth application, drug screening, physical exam, polygraph and psychological testing, as well as extensive background investigation.

Property Unit

The Property Unit oversees all inventory procedures for property taken into custody by the Aventura Police Department. This Unit performs various tasks related to property taken into the Property Room. The two technicians receive evidence for safe keeping. They also locate owners of found property. Additionally, all narcotics, firearms and currency are stored in a secure vault. The technicians maintain and insure inventory control.

Public Information Unit

The Public Information Unit was created at the direction of the Chief of Police and it is responsible for informing the news media of events that occur within the public domain that involves the agency and its personnel. The PIO coordinates press conferences for the Chief of Police; prepares press releases; assists Crime Stoppers and keeps a good working relationship with both the print and TV media.

The primary goal of the PIO is to maintain a good channel of communication that will assist the Aventura Police Department in the transfer of information in a timely and professional manner.
